  2. enquiry or doubt. When indicating enquiry, it
  3. is placed at the end of a direct question
  4. (`Who is coming?') but never at the end of an
  5. indirect question (`He asked us who was
  6. coming'). When indicating doubt, it usually
  7. appears between brackets, to show that a
  8. writer or editor is puzzled or uncertain
  9. about quoted text.
